No! Just because you see a dumpster, doesn't mean it's trash, doesn't mean it's going to a landfill. A lot of these go to transfer stations were it gets sorted for recycling.

Up close, I like the rift sawn pattern a lot, but as flooring, I think the dark, blackish lines make it look dingy. I'd stain it darker for flooring, and stick with natural for closer uses, I guess. Other than higher price, my big concern would be, before I went cutting it, what's in all that "soy glue"? 🤔

Twice I have encountered neighbors doing repair work, one was putting up a new fence and another was rebuilding a shed. I asked if I could have some of the scrap lumber and they were more than happy to give it to me. The guy replacing the fence had 4x4 posts that I cut the rotted bottoms off and the shed guy was throwing away 2x4's that were in good shape but a few had paint on them. I set them aside and was able to use them on my next project.

Looks like OSB. Could be used as MDF or MDP in furniture, and because of the velocity of growth, could be cheapper than any wood. It have a great potential in poor countreis that wood is pretty expensive. Here in Brazil probably would be used like MDF finished with some veneer or formica.

I used to work Security for years. Spent a lot of time on construction sites. My Boss wouldn’t allow us to remove anything that was heading to the dumpster because he said it looked unprofessional even if we were given permission. I showed up one time while he was covering a shift & sure enough, he was loading up! Turns out, he didn’t ask for permission and lost that contract. Cameras! 😂 I have scored some decent scraps just by simply asking & being polite about it. As a School Bus Driver, I go past many construction sites. So far we have free-cycled our big back yard with raised garden beds, expanded deck, huge wood pile for the fire pit etc. It’s great to be able to save money! ❤

I've spoken to contractors who take all extra unused materials from jobs they've done and sell it on the side on places like Facebook Marketplace. Have a look at how many people outside of a business have lots of cabinets, tiles, lumber, slabs of stone countertops, etc. Some, who know the paying clients just trust they'll do a great job will give a list of items the clients "need" with items that they don't need and wind up keeping them to sell later. Lots of scammers out there.

This was true back in the 80s but most contractors don't have much waste left now days, they really optimize their material input better now days. All that's left is short cut off pieces usually 18" long or less, not worth my time other than use as bon fire wood.

I was working a job, and the customer was building a new house and two small outbuildings. Two thirds of the way through the house work, they wanted to cancel the smaller out building, but the material was already paid for, and the labor was factored into the cost. The owner apparently had more money than patience, so they said that was fine, and they were going to just throw away the whole lift of 2x. It must have been close to 150 sticks, so I ended up bringing as many as I could fit in my car each day for the rest of the job. I probably got 80+ before we finished up!

FIRST OFF contractors & Builders are two different entities. So, lets get that straight. Contractors are for the most part of the are hacks. The Builder hires the hackers. The hackers hire hackers to construct a pile of junk. They make thousands of dollars of waste that costs more to dispose of than the hack job they did. The supplier provided the Builder, then The Builder, provided a crap lumber. You really want to use that lumber that's been sitting out on a jobsite for several weeks to months in the weather, so you can be a hack just like the hackers. There are Builders who only build their own projects and hire no hacks. Construction sites are deemed a Construction site, this mean you can't legally just walk on to it and ask anyone anything.. that's technically trespassing no matter the time of day. And yes, you can be charged for just walking up onto a Construction site if you are not authorized to be there. So, in English, meaning, you have no business there, you can't ask anyone questions because you're not supposed to be there, comprende? Technically.

I investigate this topic for a couple of years already, through UA-cam videos ad comments, and I can pick a reason no one is mostly pointing at. Level of complexity for this jobs went up, while average Joe don't become more responsible or faster learner. It hard to break a hammer, not so much so with power tools and lots of other expensive equipment that is common nowadays. So by hiring a wrong person you get F$ckd two ways, by have you equipment that cost a fortune at risk being brocken or stolen, and high safety risk from not properly trained person used it. Industry as a whole lost this moment, because this complexity grow gradually and seamless for people inside industry, so there was no evident signs to change approach to hiring and keeping people. Now you more NEED than WANT trained person because if this. And no one wants to PAY for necessary training.

This advice is only valuable if it takes less time than what you could earn at a job to buy the lumber. If it takes you 8 hours to get $100 worth of lumber, but you could have worked at a job to earn $200 in the same 8 hours, you have just lost money.
